Homeless woman killed in crash near abandoned petrol station in JB

JOHOR BARU: Two people were killed and another seriously injured in separate road accidents in Johor Baru over the weekend.

Johor Baru South OCPD Asst Comm Raub Selamat said the first accident occurred at around 4am on Sunday (March 9) at an abandoned petrol station on Jalan Permas Utara.

"A 50-year-old local man was driving a bus from Taman Permas Jaya towards Bakar Batu when a woman, believed to be homeless and around 30 years old, suddenly crossed the road.

"The driver was unable to avoid her, and she was fatally struck. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene," he said in a statement on Sunday (March 9).

In a separate case, ACP Raub said a motorcyclist was killed while his pillion rider was seriously injured in an accident on Jalan Abad, Taman Abad, at about 3am on Saturday (March 8).

"The 24-year-old local rider and his 41-year-old friend lost control of the motorcycle while navigating a bend.

"The vehicle veered to the right side of the road and crashed into a streetlight pole, throwing both men onto the road.

“The motorcyclist suffered severe head injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene, while the pillion rider sustained head injuries and was rushed to Sultanah Aminah Hospital for treatment," he said.

Both cases are being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
