Cops investigating controversial video allegedly mocking religious ritual

KUALA LUMPUR: The police have opened investigations into a controversial video involving Era FM radio DJs that allegedly mocked a religious ritual.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain said six police reports have been lodged over the issue.

"Our investigation revealed the video has since been taken down.

"The video was viewed 95,400 times and was shared by 204 users," he said when contacted on Tuesday (March 4).

The case is classified under Section 298 of the Penal Code and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act (CMA), he said.

Under Section 298 of the Penal Code, the accused could face up to a year imprisonment or a fine or both upon conviction.

For Section 233 of the CMA, those convicted could face a fine not exceeding RM50,000 or a maximum one years imprisonment or both and shall also be liable to a further fine of RM1,000 for every day during which the offence is continued after conviction.

"One of the reports was lodged by a 44-year-old engineer who saw the video on Facebook involving several individuals from the radio station mocking the Hindu religion," he said.

He added that the DJs involved have since issued an apology through the Era FM Facebook page.
