KLIA, Ampang drug busts net RM37.5mil in drugs, 12 arrests


SHAH ALAM: A slew of arrests at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) and in Ampang has led to millions of drugs being seized before they were due to be trafficked out of the country.

Selangor police chief Comm Datuk Shazeli Kahar said that six cases had been thwarted following arrests made from Aug 4 to 17.

“In those six operations, the police have arrested three locals and nine foreigners who we believed had been part of various drug distribution rings,” he said during a press conference on Wednesday (Aug 19) at the police contingent here.

He said the arrests were made at the airport in Sepang and in two locations in Ampang.

Her added that three of the cases were found after scanning by machines at the airport flagged suspicious suitcases, he added.

Investigations also showed that the foreign suspects had entered Malaysia on social visit passes, with their time in the country differing from just arriving to being in Malaysia for “several days”.

“The six operations led to the seizure of RM37.5mill in suspected ganja buds, heroin base and cocaine.

“The arrests and seizures showed that large-scale drug syndicates are active here, and that they pose a serious threat to the public.

“The police will increase enforcement actions without compromise," he said.

Comm Shazeli said the public is also advised not to be involved in any drug mule operations and to refrain from offering to carry suitcases belonging to other people without knowing the contents.
