Mother of drug-positive baby not an addict, say Kelantan cops

KOTA BARU: The mother of a baby who tested positive for drugs is not a drug addict, says Kelantan police chief Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mamat.

He said the woman told police that any benzodiazepine detected in her urine was from medication she takes for anxiety.

"We conducted a urine test on the woman. Benzo is similar to ketum, but she said she was taking it for anxiety.

"However, the case involving the baby is still under investigation," he said at a press conference at the Kelantan Police Contingent Headquarters here on Wednesday (Aug 19).

Mohd Yusoff said the woman also tested negative for methamphetamine and other drugs.

He said investigations were still underway into the test results for the baby, which showed the presence of two amphetamine and benzodiazepines.

On Aug 12, a baby girl tested positive for drugs at the neonatal intensive care unit of Raja Perempuan Zainab II Hospital here.

Police subsequently arrested the baby's 30-year-old mother for investigations under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001 and Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
