PETALING JAYA: The arrest of a reporter by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) was done based on a report that had been lodged, says Tan Sri Azam Baki.
"Any individual who has received or asked for gratification from any party for any action, whether for themselves or others, commits a corruption offence," said the MACC Chief Commissioner at a press conference on the matter at the MACC HQ here Monday (March 3).
Azam said that corruption laws apply not only to those in the government sector but to everyone.
He added that the MACC has never stopped investigating the cartels that were thought to have brought in illegal foreign workers into the country.
When asked if the remand order for the reporter would be extended he said that he would leave it to his investigators to decide.
Previously a reporter was arrested by the MACC after he allegedly took a RM20,000 bribe to take down an article.
The media previously reported on the arrest of the 49-year-old journalist in a hotel in Shah Alam on Friday after investigations found that he had requested RM100,000, which was later reduced to RM20,000.
He is now under remand for four days.
