Geramm monitoring case of journalist arrested for alleged bribery

PETALING JAYA: Gerakan Media Merdeka (Geramm), a journalist group advocating free and independent media, is closely monitoring the case of a journalist who was arrested for allegedly having received a RM20,000 bribe.

In a press statement from the group, it said that it is aware of the case and has received information on the matter.

"We are closely monitoring the situation and remain committed to advocating for press freedom and the rights of media practitioners.

"At this time, we refrain from commenting on the specifics of the case and will wait for the investigation to run its course.

"However, we continue to stand in defense of all press personnel and insist that the journalist under investigation be accorded fair treatment, including access to legal representation, in accordance with the principles of justice and due process," said the statement on Saturday (March 1).

It was reported that a senior journalist from Malaysiakini was arrested on Friday (Feb 28) for allegedly receiving a RM20,000 bribe from an agent dealing with migrant workers, said Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki.
