SAR op in Pontian waters for ship's missing crewman

PONTIAN: A search and rescue (SAR) operation is ongoing in the district's waters for a crewman who fell from a Singapore-bound vessel.

Johor Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) acting director Maritime Capt Kama Azri Kamil said the SAR was activated after the incident was reported on Monday (Feb 17).

“The 36-year-old Indian national crewman, wearing an orange boiler suit, was last seen at around 7.30pm.

“He was believed to have fallen overboard from the merchant ship at 1.4 nautical miles (2.59km) south-east of Tanjung Bin here,” he said in a statement on Wednesday (Feb 19).

He added that the Marshall Islands-registered merchant ship had set off from Tanjung Pelepas Port and was bound for Singapore when the man was reported missing.

Capt Kama Azri said the search, involving multiple agencies such as police, the Civil Defence Department and the Fire and Rescue Department, is ongoing in Tanjung Bin waters in hopes of finding the missing crewman.
