DAP veterans Tan and Fong pull out of CEC polls

DAP's national adviser Tan Kok Wai (L) and national treasurer Fong Kui Lun(R)

PETALING JAYA: DAP's national adviser Tan Kok Wai and national treasurer Fong Kui Lun have announced their withdrawal from the central executive committee election in the party's upcoming 18th national congress on March 16.

In a joint statement on Wednesday (Feb 19), Cheras MP Tan and Bukit Bintang MP Fong said they would not be contesting for several reasons.

"We have dedicated half a century to championing the ideals of DAP, witnessing its transformation from a long-standing opposition party to a key partner in the coalition government.

"This long journey gave us a great sense of pride and satisfaction.

"Today, we have a good leadership succession plan.

"The time has come to (make way for) the new generation of leaders to play a pivotal leadership role," they said.

They also said the core leadership team "gives us the assurance and confidence that the party’s future is in capable hands."

Tan and Fong said the evolving political landscape had shaped distinct leadership styles in each generation.

"Nonetheless, the fundamental principle remains that reforms must align with societal progress, in response to the changing political environment, and national priorities should be boldly pursued," they said.

"While some of us have had the privilege of serving multiple terms as members of Parliament and state assemblies, we also acknowledge the countless unsung heroes... ordinary members who have selflessly contributed behind the scenes, making significant sacrifices for the party’s cause," they added, expressing their gratitude to all party comrades.
