PKR National Congress: Anwar announces abolition of Auku, grants universities more freedom

AYER KEROH: The Universities and University Colleges Act (Auku) 1971 will be abolished, announced Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

The Prime Minister, who is also PKR president, announced this during his policy speech at the 2026 PKR National Congress on Saturday (Aug 15).

Anwar said despite several amendments having been made previously to the Act, there were still matters that did not satisfy university students.

“University students feel that they should be free. We have given them greater freedom through amendments to the Auku (previously), but there are still some who are dissatisfied, and they have submitted a memorandum.

“So today, I want to announce that we will abolish the Act," he said

The abolition of the Act is part of PKR’s longstanding reform commitments.

Earlier this year, a group of student protesters called for Auku to be abolished by walking to the Parliament building to hand over a memorandum outlining their demands.

The Higher Education Ministry said they were prepared to listen to all grievances raised by student protesters.

Its minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir said his ministry is open to reviewing Auku, an Act he referred to as dynamic.
