AYER KEROH: Plans to abolish the Universities and University Colleges Act (Auku) 1971 will be brought to the Cabinet next week, says Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
“I will bring (the matter) to the Cabinet on Wednesday (Aug 19),” he said during a doorstep interview at the 2026 PKR National Congress on Saturday (Aug 15).

In his policy speech earlier, Anwar announced that the Act would be abolished, following concerns among university students that remain unresolved despite several amendments to the legislation.
The abolition of the Act is part of PKR’s longstanding reform commitments.
Earlier this year, a group of student protesters called for Auku to be abolished by marching to Parliament to submit a memorandum outlining their demands.
The Higher Education Ministry said it was prepared to listen to the grievances raised by the student protesters.
Its minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir said the ministry was open to reviewing Auku, which he described as a dynamic Act.
