KOTA KINABALU: Non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and corporate entities are urged to help flood victims in Kota Marudu, the hardest-hit district in Sabah with the most displaced residents.
"Apart from financial aid, essential supplies such as clean water and food are critical for the victims' well-being," said Sazalye Donol, special officer to the Sabah Chief Minister.
“The state government has already provided assistance through the Kota Marudu District Office for distribution to those in need.
"However, I appeal to NGOs and companies to contribute essential supplies,” he said after visiting several temporary relief centres on Thursday (Jan 30).
The centres included SMK Bandau, Dewan SA Advent Goshen, SK Ranau and SMK Bengkongan.
Sazalye, who is Kota Marudu PKR division chief, also delivered food aid and donations to the evacuees.
“We hope the floodwaters will recede soon so the victims can return home.
"I am truly moved by the dedication of the Social Welfare Department personnel and the Malaysia Civil Defence Department (APM), who have been working tirelessly to help those in need,” he added.
As of 9.30am on Friday (Jan 31), a total of 2,360 people from 866 families were sheltering at eight relief centres.
The Social Welfare Department's Disaster Info Portal also lists Kota Belud, Telupid, Pitas, Beluran, Lahad Datu, Sandakan, Beaufort, Tongod and Paitan as districts that have been affected by continuous heavy rain.
