Dr Wee: Recent viral post does not represent MCA's views

KUALA LUMPUR: MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong expresses regret over the recent posting made by a retired party member, saying that it does not reflect the party’s opinion.

He said that he had asked Johor MCA to investigate the matter and ensure that it would not happen again.

He added that the post was taken from another source and was posted by the retired member on the Johor MCA's Facebook page.

“We shouldn’t have shared (the posting) if it's not from us. Even if we want to share anything, the president will deliver it to the media or party members.

“However, if you are familiar with my way, I will not issue any criticism a few days before any festivities,” he told reporters at the MCA Chinese New Year Open House here on Wednesday (Jan 29).

On Tuesday (Jan 28), Johor MCA apologised for a viral post on its official Facebook page, saying that a retired member accidentally posted it.

It said the post was shared by one of the Facebook page’s administrators without informing the party’s key leaders.

Previously, a screenshot of the now-deleted post criticising several moves by the government had made the rounds on social media.

The post compared federal allocations for Islamic-related matters with the absence of free tolls during Chinese New Year.

Dr Wee added that prompt action was taken once party members alerted him about the matter.

“Once again, the party apologises for the mistake. Moving forward, only the Johor MCA administrator chief will be the Facebook page administrator. No one else can post,” he said.

The Ayer Hitam MP reiterated that the party advocates for the muhibbah spirit (goodwill) and called the public to move on from the issue.

“MCA is a pragmatic party and we are aware of ways to ensure racial harmony.

“The muhibbah spirit should always be instilled and we don’t want the views of others to reflect what we stand for,” he added.
