Boy killed, five injured in MPV crash into parked lorry

KUANTAN: A 12-year-old boy was killed while five of his family members were seriously injured after their vehicle crashed into the back of a parked lorry at KM164.7 of the East Coast Expressway, heading east, early on Friday (Jan 24).

Maran district police chief Supt Wong Kim Wai said that in the 1am accident, Muhammad Al Amin Mohd Adil, who was in the front passenger seat, was confirmed dead at the scene.

Wong said preliminary investigations found that the victim's 41-year-old father was driving the Toyota Alphard multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) from Kuala Lumpur towards Terengganu when the accident occurred.

He said the vehicle is believed to have rear-ended a lorry parked on the emergency lane due to a flat tyre.

"Investigations found that the lorry driver had stopped his vehicle to change the back tyre and safety cones were placed behind the vehicle to warn other road users,” he said in a statement.

Wong said that the boy's parents and his three siblings suffered serious injuries and were taken to the Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah Hospital in Temerloh while the lorry driver, 35, escaped unhurt.

The case, he added, is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987. - Bernama
