Miracle recovery for South Asia’s smallest baby

A PREMATURE baby weighing a mere 350g has been recognised as the smallest newborn in South Asia, Makkal Osai reported.

His mother, identified only as Sujisha from India’s Kerala state, gave birth to the boy at just 23 weeks.

The infant was placed under intensive care at a hospital in Kochi city, Kerala.

About 100 days since his birth, the baby named Nova now weighs about 1.8kg and is able to breathe by himself.

Prior to this, his breathing was assisted by a ventilator.

Doctors said they are confident that the mother and child can be discharged from the hospital soon.

Sujisha was malnourished and unwell during the pregnancy and birth, which made the successful delivery and recovery an astonishing feat.
