KUALA LUMPUR: If you receive a letter claiming that you possess images of child pornography and asking you to contact the “authorities”, disregard it, the public has been told.According to the police, the letter, which portrays the national coat of arms and a name similar to that of the Inspector-General of Police, is fake.
Bukit Aman Commercial Crime Investigation Department director Comm Datuk Seri Ramli Mohamed Yoosuf said the police are investigating the matter after a report was received on it on Tuesday.
The document is supposedly issued by the “Pejabat Pusat Memerangi Jenayah Berkaitan Teknologi Maklumat dan Komunikasi” (Office of the Anti-Information and Communications Technology Crime Centre).
“The gist of the document is to inform the recipient that he or she is involved in several legal proceedings for possessing child pornography images.
“The recipient is also required to contact the entity that issued the document immediately or will risk being slapped with an arrest warrant.
“The document also portrays the Malaysia coat of arms and a Malaysian Bar logo, and the signee bearing a name similar to that of the IGP, but with a different designation,” he said in a statement yesterday.
Comm Ramli said the content of the document is fake and it is not issued by any government agency.
“We urge those who receive the document, be it in physical form, email, WhatsApp or others, to disregard it.
“It is believed that the document is intended to cause the recipient to worry and subsequently be duped.
“We urge those who have been victimised to lodge a police report as soon as possible,” he said.
The police are investigating the matter.
On Dec 23, Bukit Aman detained 13 men for being in possession of child pornography following joint raids in six states.
The operation, codenamed Ops Pedo Bersepadu, was carried out jointly by the police and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission.
