Perikatan to notify vacancy of opposition leader post to Dewan Rakyat speaker on April 13

PETALING JAYA: Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainuddin submitted his resignation letter as the Opposition leader on Saturday (April 11), said Perikatan Nasional chairman Datuk Seri Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar.

He said he has instructed Perikatan secretary-general Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan to forward the letter to the Dewan Rakyat Speaker

“I think it will be on Monday (April 13), because Sunday is a public holiday.

"The notification letter regarding the vacancy of the Opposition Leader’s post will be sent for the time being,” he said during a press conference at PAS Johor State Hari Raya Open House on Sunday (April 12).

Ahmad Samsuri said the position can be filled in various ways in due time.

“I believe that by the time we enter the next parliamentary sitting, we will have an Opposition Leader," he said.

Meanwhile, Ahmad Samsuri also commented on the Political Financing Bill, saying PAS has agreed with this from the very beginning.

“Before a Bill is tabled, even before the framework is finalised, there must be discussions with political parties represented in the Dewan Rakyat and those without representation too.

"It’s not about rushing, but about ensuring that when the bill is tabled in Parliament, it can be passed smoothly, unlike some proposed acts in the past that were rejected at the parliamentary stage," he said.

Previously, PAS Johor suggested the Opposition Leader role should go to PAS since Bersatu held it before, but Perikatan’s chairman said different parties have their own aspirations and the matter will be discussed.

On March 14, Ahmad Samsuri said that Hamzah would remain as Opposition Leader until PAS selects a replacement.

Hamzah was expelled from Bersatu on Feb 13 over allegations that he had sabotaged Muhyiddin and the party.

Hamzah, who has the backing of a majority of Bersatu MPs, has stated that he remains loyal to Perikatan.
