S. Korean, wanted for cheating back home, nabbed in JB with fake employment pass

JOHOR BARU: A South Korean man on the police wanted list for cheating in his home country has been detained here for using a fake employment pass.

Johor Immigration Department director Datuk Mohd Rusdi Mohd Darus said the 49-year-old suspect was arrested in a house at an upscale neighbourhood in Iskandar Puteri on Wednesday (April 8).

"The suspect is believed to have been involved in a cheating case in his homeland causing losses amounting to 3.5bil Korean Won, equivalent to RM9.4mil," he said in a statement on Thursday (April 9).

Rusdi said the suspect’s wife, a 55-year-old Chinese national, and the couple’s two sons aged 12 and 20 were at home when the suspect was detained.

Rusdi said the couple’s sons were South Korean citizens; one held a social visit pass while the other had a student pass.

He added that at the same time, the authorities also screened a Filipina who came to clean the house daily.

"The male suspect failed to produce valid travel documents and our system showed both he and the cleaning lady had overstayed in Malaysia," he said.

Rusdi said the two have been remanded for 14 days for alleged offences under Section 15(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63.
