Cop claims trial to bribery in KK

KOTA KINABALU: A police sergeant has pleaded not guilty to receiving bribes to overlook a drug trafficking case in Kudat district in 2021.

Sjn Zakaria Mohd Jasni, 41, who was based at the Kudat Police Station Narcotic Unit at that time, was accused of receiving bribes amounting to RM1,800 into his bank account on June 18 that year.

The Sessions court here was told that this was so he would not take action against a suspected drug trafficker in the district.

“With that, you (are accused of committing) an offence under Section 17(A) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act 2009, and can be convicted under Section 24(1) of the same Act,” Special Corruptions Court judge Jason Juga said here on Tuesday (Jan 14).

Zakaria, who is now based at the Semporna police station, was represented by Luke Ressa Balang.

He was allowed RM10,000 bail with RM3,000 in deposit and a local surety.

He is required to report to the nearest MACC office once in two months.

The court also ordered him not to tamper with any witnesses, and to surrender his passport until disposal of the case.

If convicted, he faces up to 20 years’ imprisonment, or a fine of at least five times the amount of graft or RM10,000, whichever amount is higher, or both.
