Zamri denies fleeing country, ready to meet IGP

KUALA LUMPUR: Zamri Vinoth denies that he has fled the country amid investigations into his remarks that were said to have incited violence.

In a Facebook post on Saturday (March 14), Zamri said he had no reason to flee and would cooperate with the authorities if required.

He added that he was ready to meet Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail over the matter.

"I will personally meet the IGP if necessary. I am not running away and there is no reason for me to do so," he said, reported Sinar Harian.

Zamri also questioned why he was being blamed for several incidents involving attacks, arson and damage to homes.

"Why am I the one being accused? What offence did I commit? What exactly did I incite?" he said.

He further claimed that others who incited violence were not facing similar action and they should face similar action.

Earlier, police said Zamri and activist Tamim Dahri, who are being investigated over separate cases, are believed to have fled to Thailand.

Mohd Khalid said authorities were working with Thai counterparts to track down the two.

He said investigations into remarks made by Zamri during a rally in the capital on Feb 7 had been referred to the Attorney General's Chambers, which had instructed that he be charged under Section 505(b) of the Penal Code for statements conducing to public mischief.

Another investigation involving statements allegedly insulting the Indian community has also been referred to the Penang prosecution office, with instructions to charge him under Section 4(1) of the Sedition Act 1948.

Meanwhile, the investigation paper involving Tamim has been submitted to the Kedah prosecution office over his alleged act of damaging a soolam (a sacred Hindu symbol) at the site of a former temple in Langkawi.

Tamim is expected to be charged under Section 295 of the Penal Code.

Mohd Khalid said the charges would proceed once both individuals are located and brought back to Malaysia.
