IGP: Zamri Vinoth, Tamim Dahri investigations completed, both possibly in Thailand

KUALA LUMPUR: The investigations involving both Zamri Vinoth and Tamim Dahri have been completed, says the Inspector-General of Police.

However, Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail said intelligence indicates that both men have fled to Thailand.

He said the police have recommended that both men be charged.

"The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) investigated Zamri over a statement linked to the organisation of a gathering at the Sogo complex on Feb 7.

"The investigation paper has been referred to the Attorney-General’s Chambers, which has directed that Zamri be charged under Section 505(b) of the Penal Code for making statements conducive to public mischief.

"The offence carries a penalty of up to two years’ imprisonment, a fine, or both upon conviction," he said in a statement late Friday (March 13) night.

Mohd Khalid said efforts to track both men are ongoing with the assistance of Thai authorities.

"Charges will be carried out once the suspects are located and brought back to Malaysia,” he said.

The IGP confirmed that investigations into Tamim have been completed in connection with the alleged act of damaging a soolam, a sacred symbol in the Hindu religion, at the former site of the Sri Maha Muniswarar temple in Langkawi, Kedah.

"The investigation paper has been referred to the Kedah State Prosecution Director’s Office, which has instructed that Tamim be charged under Section 295 of the Penal Code for injuring or defiling a place or object of worship with intent to insult a religion.

"The offence carries a maximum penalty of two years’ imprisonment, a fine, or both upon conviction," he added.

Meanwhile, Mohd Khalid said that a separate investigation involving Zamri over statements allegedly insulting the Indian community has been referred to the Penang State Prosecution Director’s Office.

"Authorities are seeking instructions on possible charges under Section 4(1) of the Sedition Act 1948.

"We remain committed to taking firm action against any individual or group involved in activities that could threaten public order and safety.
