KOTA KINABALU: The Backbenchers Club (BBC) Sabah has pledged unwavering support for Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor amidst calls for his resignation.

BBC Sabah chairman Datuk Dr Yusof Yacob affirmed their solidarity, adding that Hajiji’s leadership remains vital as he holds the mandate and trust to lead the state effectively.

“We do not wish to amplify these calls for resignation. As I mentioned, we, the backbenchers, stand solidly behind the chief minister,” Dr Yusof said after a BBC Sabah special meeting on Monday (Dec 9).

The controversy revolves around leaked videos purportedly showing assemblymen receiving bribes linked to mining leases, raising questions about the Sabah government’s integrity.

When asked about controversial videos implicating several assemblymen, including himself, Dr Yusof said they are leaving the matter to the authorities to investigate.

“We do not want to dwell on it. We believe the people are mature and educated enough to understand the issue. We don’t want to make it bigger than it is,” he said.

The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) is investigating the videos and has recorded statements of the assemblymen including three state ministers.

Dr Yusof stressed that the meeting focused on ensuring the efficient delivery of government aid, particularly to the B40 group, and implementing programmes outlined in the recently presented budget.

He highlighted key initiatives such as the RM300 monthly aid for B40 recipients, the SMJ (Sabah Maju Jaya) housing scheme, the one-off RM5,000 assistance for street vendors, and various smaller government projects.

“We discussed how best to serve the public efficiently, ensuring they benefit from the government’s plans. Our role as backbenchers is to provide feedback and ensure these initiatives reach the targeted communities swiftly,” he said.

Dr Yusof urged government officers, particularly those in ministries and district offices, to fulfil their responsibilities promptly.

He stressed that delays should be avoided, as the people have waited long enough for these initiatives.

“We are committed to solving the issues faced by rural communities. Each constituency has its challenges, and we hear these voices. Our focus remains on delivering solutions and assistance to the people.”
