KUCHING: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and Sarawak police have busted a syndicate linked to stolen telecommunications equipment during Ops Lusuh, an integrated operation conducted from June 18 to 19 in Kuching, Padawan and Kota Samarahan.
In a statement on Wednesday (June 24), MCMC said the premises in Kota Samarahan were believed to have been used as a storage facility.
"Inspections uncovered various telecommunications equipment, including base station batteries and remote radio units (RRUs), believed to belong to telecommunications companies and suspected of having been obtained illegally.
"Police detained two individuals to assist in investigations, while all the equipment found was seized as evidence," it said.
MCMC said theft and vandalism involving telecommunications assets are not only criminal offences but can also disrupt communication services for consumers and affect critical sectors.
Offenders face action under Section 235 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 (Act 588), which carries a fine of up to RM500,000, imprisonment of up to five years, or both, upon conviction.
"The operation reflects the close cooperation between MCMC, the police, the Sarawak Ministry of Utility and Telecommunication and relevant enforcement agencies in combating crimes that threaten the security of the country's telecommunications infrastructure.
"This strategic cooperation will continue to be strengthened to ensure the country's communication network remains safe, stable and resilient," it said.
The public is urged to provide information to the authorities if they detect any suspicious activities involving telecommunications assets. – Bernama
