KOTA KINABALU: The ultraviolet (UV) index in Kota Kinabalu reached an extreme level of 11 at noon on Monday (Aug 10), according to the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia).
Data on the department's website showed that UV levels began rising from about 8am, reaching the high category at around 10am and very high levels between 10.30am and 11.30am.

The reading then climbed above 11, categorised as extreme, from around noon until about 1pm before gradually declining.
By about 3pm, the UV index had fallen to level five, which is in the moderate category.
Under the UV index scale, readings of eight to 10 are classified as very high, while readings of 11 and above are considered extreme.
MetMalaysia advised the public to take precautions when outdoors during periods of high UV exposure, including using sunscreen, wearing suitable protective clothing and seeking shade.

In a recent report, MetMalaysia director-general Dr Mohd Hisham Mohd Anip said UV levels were expected to remain high in most parts of the country for about a week due to reduced rainfall and limited cloud cover.
He said the southwest monsoon was in its active phase, bringing lower rainfall and drier conditions to most areas.
“The intensity of the UV index differs according to weather conditions, cloud formation and location,” he said.
He added that readings were generally higher when the sun was at a higher angle, usually from about 10am in Sabah and Sarawak and from 11am in Peninsular Malaysia.
Mohd Hisham advised the public to be mindful when carrying out outdoor activities and, where possible, reduce prolonged exposure to the sun.
