GEORGE TOWN: The Penang High Court ordered businessman Tan Sri Tan Kok Ping to pay RM50,000 in court management fees after his defamation suit against Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow was found to be without basis.

Justice Quay Chew Soon made the verdict online via Zoom proceedings at 9am on Tuesday (Nov 26).

Quay said the suit brought by Tan against Chow has been found to be without basis as the statements made by Chow were based on facts.

The defamation suit arose from remarks allegedly made by Chow concerning Tan’s resignation from the board of trustees of the Silver Jubilee Home for the Aged in December last year.

Prior to the trial, both parties had attempted a court-ordered mediation session in May but it failed to reach a settlement.

Speaking to reporters later, Chow said he was "happy" to receive the court verdict.
