GEORGE TOWN: A total of 47,630 visitors have visited the Penang State Museum in Lebuh Farquhar since it reopened on July 24 following an extensive restoration and conservation project.
State tourism committee chairman Wong Hon Wai said the strong turnout reflected growing public interest in Penang's history and heritage, attracting both local and international visitors.
"The response has been very encouraging. On average, the museum receives about 1,000 visitors a day, while weekends have recorded close to 4,000 visitors," he said during a press conference at the museum on Wednesday (Aug 26).
Wong said the museum was reopened following an official ceremony on July 23, officiated by Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Ramli Ngah Talib and attended by Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow.
He noted that the state government offered free admission for five weeks, from July 24 to Aug 31, in conjunction with the reopening and National Month celebrations.
"The free entry initiative was introduced to encourage more people, especially Penangites, to reconnect with the state's history, culture and heritage through a modern, visitor-centric museum experience," he said.
Located in one of Penang's most historic buildings, the museum traces its origins to 1816.
The building previously housed Penang Free School before becoming Hutchings School, and was converted into a museum in 1964.
It was officially established as the Penang State Museum Board on April 14, 1965 by the late Raja Tun Uda.
Following restoration works, the museum now features refreshed galleries showcasing Penang's historical, cultural and social development, alongside improved accessibility facilities for senior citizens, children and persons with disabilities.
Wong added that the museum will offer free admission again on Sept 15 and 16.
"The free entry coincides with the anniversary of Penang Hill's recognition as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve on Sept 15, 2021, as well as Malaysia Day on Sept 16," he said.
Looking ahead, Wong said the state targets an average of 1,500 visitors per month next year as the museum strengthens its role as a key heritage attraction.
He said admission fees will be introduced from Sept 1. For Malaysians, children aged five to 12 will be charged RM3, adults RM5, and senior citizens or persons with disabilities RM3.
For non-Malaysians, children aged five to 12 will be charged RM10, adults RM25, and senior citizens or persons with disabilities RM10.
Also present at the press conference was Penang Museum and Art Gallery director Haryany Mohamad.
