Two arrested in connection to abandoned baby in Sibu

SIBU: Two individuals, including a 14-year-old girl, have been arrested in connection with the discovery of an abandoned newborn baby boy on Jalan Tong Sang on Tuesday (Oct 29).

Sibu OCPD, Asst Comm Zulkipli Suhaili, stated that the 44-year-old man and the teenage girl will be remanded on Oct 30 for further investigation.

The case is being investigated under Section 317 of the Penal Code for concealing a birth with the intention of abandoning a baby.

If convicted, offenders could face up to two years in jail, a fine, or both.

Zulkipli reported that at about 8.30am on Tuesday (Oct 29), the Sibu District Control Center received a MERS 999 emergency call from a member of the public reporting the discovery of a baby boy still alive in a dustbin at a shophouse in Jalan Tong Sang.

The baby was found with the placenta and umbilical cord still intact, believed to have been born less than 24 hours prior.

The witness discovered the baby when passing by the area.

Zulkipli said the baby, weighing 1.48kg, has been sent to Sibu Hospital for medical examination.

The initial examination indicated that the baby was born normally and did not suffer any physical injury.
