LANGKAWI: Those planning to visit Langkawi will need to exclude Dataran Lang from their itinerary as the landmark is currently undergoing significant upgrades.
Langkawi Development Authority (Lada) chief executive officer Datuk Haslina Abdul Hamid said work at the picturesque site is near 65% complete.
“We are on track to finish everything by Sept 24.
“The revitalised Dataran Lang will be a more welcoming and vibrant place,” she said.
The project, which began on Feb 28, encompasses a broad scope of technical and structural improvements.
The renovations involve repainting the iconic eagle statue, electrical works, fountain enhancement, kiosk installations and waterproofing, among others.
Haslina said a revamped Dataran Lang would serve as a platform for local traders to generate income through the kiosks.
She said the upgraded facilities were designed to meet the needs of both visitors and vendors, creating an opportunity for entrepreneurs to showcase and sell their products in an effort to boost the local economy.
“Its scenic location and enhanced amenities make it an ideal spot for organising festivals, cultural events and other gatherings that celebrate Langkawi’s rich heritage and vibrant community life,” she added.
Dataran Lang is home to Langkawi’s iconic giant eagle statue, a symbol tied to the island’s name derived from the Malay words “helang” (eagle) and “kawi” (reddish brown).
The 12m-tall statue, perched on a star-shaped concrete deck overlooking Kuah Jetty, warmly greets travellers arriving in Langkawi.
