Security level ramped up in selected areas

KUALA LUMPUR: Government buildings, critical facilities and popular public areas have been placed at the highest level of security following incidents at several sensitive locations and government premises, says Bukit Aman.

Federal Management Department director Comm Datuk Seri Azmi Abu Kassim said the incidents had caused public anxiety over the level of safety and public order in the country.

“As (part of) an ongoing effort to ensure public order is maintained, the police have put security at the highest level at government buildings, places of interest and critical facilities,” he said in a statement.

Comm Azmi assured the public that the police are always prepared to ensure public safety.

“The Inspector-General of Police has ordered the top brass and personnel out in the field to take comprehensive measures in dispensing their duties while also maintaining compliance with standard operating procedures and orders by the police force.

“The public should cooperate with the police and provide information on national security issues to the authorities,” he said.

He assured that the police would take stern action against any attempts to compromise security and disrupt public order.

“Action will be taken against anyone who threatens the country, irrespective of their status or background,” he said.

On May 17, two policemen were killed and another was injured when they were attacked by an armed intruder at the Ulu Tiram police station in the wee hours of the morning.

In the evening the same day, police stopped two men who had allegedly tried to trespass into Istana Negara with a machete in their car.
