Touch on 3R issues and your position won't shield you from the law, says Anwar

GEORGE TOWN: The law applies equally to everyone when it comes to 3R (race, religion and royalty) issues, says Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

He said it did not matter who the person was or which party they belonged to—action must be taken if the peace was threatened.

"I must emphasise that we do not compromise at all... especially if you touch 3R.

"This touches on the King's position... one cannot compromise," he said at a press conference at Komtar on Friday (April 5).

Anwar was responding to queries earlier in the day about Umno Youth chief Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh's arrest in Kota Kinabalu.

In a video posted on Facebook, Dr Muhamad Akmal was seen being whisked away by police in an SUV.

The arrest followed criticisms of a picture on social media showing him holding a sword.

Anwar said the national institutions must be defended, including constitutional principles, Islamic rights and non-Islamic rights.

"All of that is in the Constitution.

"If the investigation is carried out and there are charges and punishment, do not dispute it," he said.

On Thursday (April 4), Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husian said the post was not investigated as no report had been lodged against Dr Muhamad Akmal, the Merlimau assemblyman.

However, on Friday, Razarudin said two police reports had been received, and the case was being investigated under Section 4(1) of the Sedition Act 1948 and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.

He added, “Investigation papers will be referred to the Attorney General’s Chambers after the probe is completed.”

Since March 26, there have been three petrol bomb attacks on KK Super Mart stores in the wake of the controversial socks issue.

Convenience store chain KK Super Mart has been mired in controversy since March 13 after socks with the word “Allah" printed on them were discovered in the Bandar Sunway outlet.

Dr Muhamad Akmal had been calling for a boycott of the retail chain stores even after its management swiftly retracted the socks, publicly apologised for the mistake, and cancelled its contract with the supplier.

On March 26, KK Mart Group founder and executive chairman Datuk Seri Dr Chai Kee Kan and his wife, as the company’s director, were charged under Section 298 of the Penal Code for intentionally wounding the religious feelings of others by allegedly putting the socks on sale.
