GEORGE TOWN: Police have busted a foreign-run scam call centre operating from a luxury condominium in Tanjung Bungah, allegedly targeting victims in China and Taiwan with fake online tour packages.
Eight foreign nationals, seven men and one woman aged 25 to 37, were arrested during a raid at about 4.45pm on Thursday (July 30)
The operation was carried out by officers from the Northeast district police headquarters' Criminal Investigation Department, Commercial Crime Investigation Department and Tanjung Tokong police station.
Police also seized various computer and telecommunications equipment believed to have been used in the scam operation.
George Town OCPD Asst Comm Abdul Rozak Muhammad said the case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating and Section 120B of the Penal Code for criminal conspiracy.
"The suspects have been remanded for three days from July 31 until Aug 2 to facilitate investigations," he said in a statement on Friday (July 31).
