MACC deploys officers to Tabung Haji HQ following RCI findings

PUTRAJAYA: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has deployed eight investigating officers to the Lembaga Tabung Haji headquarters.

The move marks the beginning of its investigation into the findings of the Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) on the pilgrimage fund.

MACC chief commissioner Datuk Seri Abd Halim Aman said the commission had also set up a special committee to examine the main and ancillary issues raised in the report.

"Our officers entered the Lembaga Tabung Haji headquarters this morning.

"They are identifying documentation related to the matters highlighted in the RCI report, as well as issues relevant to our investigation," he told a press conference at the MACC headquarters here on Friday (July 31).

"The focus of the investigation is to determine whether there were elements of corruption, abuse of power or other irregularities under the MACC Act 2009 and the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001 (AMLA).

"Anyone identified as being linked to the investigation will be called in to have their statements recorded in accordance with the prescribed procedures," Abd Halim said.

Earlier, the MACC said in a statement that the investigation team was led by its Senior Director of the Investigation Division, Datuk Mohd Hafaz Nazar.

The RCI report on Tabung Haji, uploaded to the Islamic Development Department official portal on Thursday (July 30), recommended that a forensic audit be conducted to examine how past investment decisions were made, resulting in the severe impairment of Lembaga Tabung Haji's assets.

The report, which investigated Lembaga Tabung Haji's management and operations from 2014 to 2020, also identified problematic investments that require forensic auditing.

The RCI also found evidence of suspicious transactions and the concealment of information.
