Dr M should be probed over RM214mil Opcom contract issue, says Puad

PETALING JAYA: Datuk Seri Dr Puad Zakarshi has urged the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) to investigate Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad on the revelation that a company linked to the former premier's son received a contract for RM214.2mil, 20 years ago.

The Umno supreme council member said this after Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim alleged in his defence statement at the Shah Alam High Court on Thursday (June 15) that Opcom Sdn Bhd received the contract when Dr Mahathir's third son, Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir, was a director of the company.

In a Facebook post Friday (June 16), Puad said the statement by Anwar was a serious matter and MACC should reopen the old case.

"The Prime Minister has shown courage with his statement and Dr Mahathir should be investigated," Puad said.

Anwar said Telekom Malaysia Bhd had issued a letter to the Finance Ministry seeking permission to engage in direct negotiations with Opcom in 2003.

Telekom is a government-linked company with the Finance Ministry and Anwar said Dr Mahathir was the prime minister and finance minister at the time.

Dr Mahathir has filed a RM150mil defamation suit against Anwar over the latter's speech at the PKR congress held at Shah Alam's Melawati Stadium.

Dr Mahathir claimed the contents of the speech had tarnished his reputation.
