Kamunting police station built on church land being demolished, says Perak chief cop

IPOH: The land where a police quarters and house of the Kamunting police station chief sits belongs to the Titular Roman Catholic Bishop of Melaka.

Perak police chief Comm Datuk Seri Mohd Yusri Hassan Basri said investigations conducted found that the police had been using about 555ha of the land since 1951.

"The Land and Mines Department confirmed on May 13, 2021, that the land is indeed owned by the church since 1883.

"The buildings have been vacated and are being demolished," he said in a statement on Friday (June 9).

Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail on Wednesday (June 7) told the Dewan Rakyat that the case has been classified as "no further action" following a police investigation.

Saifuddin was replying to Zahari Kechik (PN-Jeli) who had wanted to know about the status of the investigation.

A news portal reported in April last year that the piece of land had changed ownership without anyone's knowledge.

Comm Mohd Yusri said the police had previously received notification from the church on the status of the land on April 15, 2021, stating that it belonged to them.

"A police report was lodged and investigations were carried out immediately and also referred to the state prosecuting director.

"The matter has been classified as 'no further action' since there was no element of fraud proven," he said.
