More must be done to prepare Malaysia for foreign investors, says Anwar

PUTRAJAYA: More must be done to meet the needs of those looking to invest in Malaysia, says Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

“If we only take in investments but do not prepare the infrastructure and skills, there will be issues," said the Prime Minister.

“We have just had our Budget (for 2023) approved but this needs to be looked into as things have changed. We are getting investments that are beyond our expectations," he added.

Speaking at the Finance Ministry’s monthly gathering on Tuesday (April 4), Anwar said that he has directed the ministry to coordinate and identify skill areas that the local workforce are lacking to meet investors’ demands.

“If need be, we will provide a special additional allocation so that intensive training and special courses can be given to locals to match the requirements of investors,” he added.

He said the issue of skilled workers must be given attention so that investors need not employ foreigners for the job.

The Prime Minister said that among issues raised during discussions while in China was that Chinese companies operating in Malaysia provide employment opportunities to the locals.

“If they lack the skills needed, I suggested that specialised training be given so that they have the right knowledge for the job,” he added.

Anwar attributed Malaysia’s success in getting more investment to political stability.

“Investors are also confident with our policies that are clear and not temporary in nature,” he added.

He also acknowledged that civil servants play an important role in drawing investments to the country.

“Our officers are committed to facilitating and ensuring a smooth process for investments.

“Their competency in implementing our policies has convinced investors to make Malaysia their choice investment destination,” he said.
