Dengue cases on the rise in Johor, two deaths recorded

JOHOR BARU: The number of dengue cases in Johor is on the upward trend with 1,130 cases reported in epidemiology week eight this year compared with 205 cases in the corresponding period in 2022.

State health and unity committee chairman Ling Tian Soon said from the 1,130 cases, 400 were epidemic locality cases.

"However, the 136 cases reported for the epidemiology week eight, declined by 2.2% compared with 139 cases recorded in the epidemiology week seven," he said in a statement.

Ling said Johor Baru district had the highest number of cases at 96, followed by Kulai (12) and Segamat (eight).

This was followed by Batu Pahat with four cases; Pontian, Tangkak and Muar (two cases respectively) and Mersing (one case).

He said there were two deaths during epidemiology week eight this year compared with zero death in the corresponding period in 2022.

"A total of 405 compound notices totalling RM202,500 were issued to premises found to be breeding Aedes mosquitoes," Ling said, adding that 58.3% paid the fine.

In a separate matter, he said Johor recorded 398,513 Covid-19 cumulative cases as of Saturday (Feb 25) of which 395,501 were local infections while 3,012 were imported cases.

"Statistics showed Johor did not record a drastic increase in Covid-19 cases in the recent months and hospital bed usage is still under 1.0%," he said.
