KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi says Umno's road to its 100th anniversary depends on how well it understands and empowers the younger generation.
The Umno president said the party in 20 years' time will be shaped by the youth of today.
"We leave it to the young to determine Umno's path 20 years in the future when the party turns 100," the Umno president said in his keynote speech at Umno's 80th anniversary celebration at the World Trade Centre here on Saturday (May 2).
Ahmad Zahid said the passage of time is inevitable and carries a shared responsibility across generations.
"I was once young, filled with strong spirit. But the young today will grow older," he said.
He stressed that harmony between generations must be preserved, guided by mutual care and respect.
"My principle is that the old must care for the young and they in turn must respect elders. This is not about what is for me or for you," he said.
Describing Umno as a "home for the nation", Ahmad Zahid said the party must strengthen from within, with its foundations remaining intact.
"Umno is a house that must be fortified – and most importantly, it's roof must not leak," he said.
He added that the party's struggle should not be confined to electoral victories but must instead focus on nurturing leaders who contribute meaningfully to religion, nation and country.
Ahmad Zahid shared a series of aspirations for the Malay community, expressing hope for a generation grounded in faith, character and innovation.
"I dream of Malays whose Islamic faith does not fade, who truly understand the pillars of their religion.
"I dream of Malay youths with a strong identity, who uphold dignity and embody refined manners and noble character.
"I dream of Malays who become inventors, create ideas, generate value and drive the advancement of the nation," he said.
He emphasised unity as a cornerstone of that vision.
"I dream of Malays who stand united, creating bonds and hold firm to a shared strength," he added.
In a poignant moment, Zahid said he wished to be part of the party's centenary celebrations.
"When Umno celebrates its 100th anniversary, I hope today's youth will invite me and Tok Mat (his deputy Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan).
"Even if we are in wheelchairs pushed by our grandchildren, invite us to be part of that celebration," he said.
