All relief centres for Kg Bahagia fire victims close

SANDAKAN: All temporary relief centres set up for victims of the Kampung Bahagia fire in Batu Sapi here are now closed.

Sandakan disaster management committee chairman Datuk Walter Kenson said there were eight centres housing those displaced by the blaze, with over 1,900 evacuees at its peak.

The eight relief centres were SK Kampung Bahagia, SMK Batu Sapi, SK Gas, SK Karamunting, the PPR Taman Batu Sapi hall, the Sim-Sim futsal court, the Sri Harapan welfare centre and Dewan Sibuga.

The blaze on April 19 destroyed about 1,000 houses in a densely populated water settlement.

Efforts are now focused on long-term recovery, including housing, relocation and rebuilding for victims.
