Hold vote of confidence in state assembly to solve Negri political crisis, says Khairy

KUALA LUMPUR: Khairy Jamaluddin suggests that the political uncertainty in Negri Sembilan can be resolved through a formal vote in the state assembly.

Speaking to reporters after Umno's 80th anniversary celebration on Saturday (May 2), the former Rembau MP said the most appropriate mechanism would be a vote of confidence or no confidence.

"Although the case in Perak established you can determine the majority via statutory declarations or royal interviews, the most acceptable way is to have a vote of confidence or no confidence.

"Whether Barisan Nasional is given the opportunity to form a government or the state assembly is dissolved, it is up to the Mentri Besar to advise the Yang di-Pertuan Besar of Negri Sembilan (Tuanku Muhriz Tuanku Munawir)," he said here on Saturday.

The Perak crisis was a dispute over the rightful mentri besar.

The Federal Court in 2010 ruled that Datuk Seri Zambry Abdul Kadir was the valid officeholder after overturning an earlier decision in favour of Datuk Seri Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin.

When asked about his role in Umno, Khairy said he has no official position but has been informally approached for his opinion on certain issues.

He declined to elaborate, saying: "It's too early because I have not started yet – but certainly no official position.

"But he (party president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi) has asked me to look at something specific."
