PONTIAN: Umno will proceed with its internal elections for the 191 divisions and 22,000 branches, including the divisions which were suspended, says secretary-general Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan.

He said an administrator has been appointed for the Arau and Tanah Merah divisions to ensure the polls will proceed smoothly starting Wednesday.

“So far, only the two divisions have been suspended but this will not disrupt the polling process at all branches and divisions,” he told reporters after launching the RM13mil Benut 4 water tank at Jalan Wawasan in Benut here yesterday. The Arau Umno division was suspended by the supreme council on Jan 5 due to internal sabotage during the 15th General Election in November last year.

The Tanah Merah Umno division was suspended on June 16, 2020, but no reason was given for the action.

When asked to comment on the latest party purge, he said he will leave it to party president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi to respond.

Umno will hold its party polls to appoint its new office bearers from Feb 1 to March 18.

In May, Umno amended its constitution to allow party polls to be held within six months after the conclusion of the general election.

The party amended Articles 10.16.1, 15.3 as well as 18.2 of its constitution for this purpose.

Umno had postponed its party elections for 18 months after the 2018/2021 term ended on June 30 in 2021, which meant that party polls for the 2021/2023 term had to be held before Dec 30 last year.

Earlier in his speech, Ahmad said the new water tank facility, which has a capacity of 4.5 million litres per day, would supply water to about 17,500 residents in Sungai Pinggan, Parit Ismail, Parit Mashar, Air Baloi, Parit Sayang and MRSM Tun Dr Ismail.

The Pontian MP also witnessed the handover of asset from water asset management company, Pengurusan Aset Air Bhd, to Ranhill SAJ Sdn Bhd.
