Liow: Poor showing, unkept promises are why DAP never keeps leaders in the same seat

BENTONG: DAP can never keep its leaders in the same constituency from one election to another because its representatives are known for unkept promises and poor performance, says Tan Sri Liow Tiong Lai.

The former MCA president said switching candidates to different areas has always been DAP’s culture.

“It can never keep an MP for too long in a constituency because it knows the elected representatives are not fulfilling promises made in the previous election.

“If you can’t put your heart into it and serve the people, how can you continue to contest?” Liow asked, commenting on DAP's recent decision to field its deputy Youth chief Young Syefura Othman in Bentong instead of incumbent MP Wong Tack.

Wong later announced his decision to defend Bentong as an independent and claimed there was politicking going on within DAP.

Liow said Wong standing as an independent in GE15 will give the people of Bentong an opportunity to judge the incumbent MP’s performance since he was elected in 2018.

“He (Wong) should be evaluated and punished by locals in Bentong.

“Let the people judge. It’s not for me to judge, but everyone knows Wong did not carry out his duties as an MP.

“(In fact), Bentong has been left behind in the last four years,” Liow told a press conference after an event at the Bentong Chinese Assembly Hall on Friday (Oct 28).

He also thanked MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong for the party’s decision to field him in Bentong.

“Thank you to the locals who also urged me to return and recently, many voices from villages and towns have also asked me to return to Bentong.

“After deep consideration, I decided to accept this candidacy and will contest in Bentong in the coming general election,” said Liow.

He added that his development agenda for Bentong had stalled once the seat was taken over by the Opposition.

“Many locals want development to continue and I can ensure that the agenda resumes," he said.

Liow won the seat in 1999 and defended it until 2018.
