PETALING JAYA: After waiting for so long to pursue tertiary education, Rohana Abdullah's wish has come true after being offered a place at Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTeM).
The 22-year-old has received an official offer from the university to pursue a diploma in Computer Science.
This was shared in a video by Bernama on Saturday (July 30), in which a representative from UTeM met Rohana and her 83-year-old adoptive mother Chee Hoi Lan at their house to present the university's offer letter.
"I'm here to convey our heartfelt congratulations, especially from our chancellor and Yang-di Pertua Negeri of Melaka Tun Dr Mohd Ali Rustam, on your acceptance to the university," said the representative, as she handed Rohana the letter as Chee looked on.
Rohana's dream of studying at a university were made possible after she received her Malaysian citizenship from Home Minister Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainuddin on April 29.
Rohana was abandoned when she was two-months-old by her Indonesian biological mother and was cared for by Chee, who was a teacher at a kindergarten where Rohana's mother worked as a cleaner.
The story of stateless Rohana being raised by Chee despite their differences in race and religion, went viral earlier this year, touching the hearts of Malaysians nationwide.
Her citizenship issue attracted the attention of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob, who then contacted her to assist with her documentation.
