Girl drowns after saving her sister at Moyog River

KOTA KINABALU: A 16-year-old girl died after saving her youngest sister from drowning at the Moyog River in Penampang near here on Sunday (Aug 8).

Penampang district police chief Deputy Supt Mohd Haris Ibrahim said the victim rescued her sister, who was being dragged by the current.

He said after safely getting her sister to safe ground, the victim apparently encountered difficulties and was pulled away by the current.

The incident occurred near their house in Kg Kambau at about 11am.

He said the rescued girl immediately told their parents.

With the help of other villagers, they found the girl's body around the area where they had been swimming.

DSP Mohd Haris did not disclose the identity of the victim or the age of the younger sister.

He said the two were among four siblings who had gone to the river for a swim.

The victim's body was sent to the Hospital Queen Elizabeth here for a post-mortem. Police do not suspect foul play.
