1MDB trial postponed, Najib on MC after eye surgery

KUALA LUMPUR: The 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) trial has been postponed to Tuesday (May 25), as Datuk Seri Najib Razak is currently on medical leave after having eye surgery.

The High Court was informed of the former premier's condition by his lead counsel Tan Sri Muhammad Shafee Abdullah here on Monday (May 24).

He told presiding judge Justice Collin Lawrence Sequerah that Najib had undergone the surgery last Thursday (May 20) and was given an MC for seven days beginning Friday (May 21) last week.

Muhammad Shafee said a copy of the MC had been passed to the court.

However, Justice Sequerah said he was only allowing a one-day postponement and that the hearing will continue at 9.30am tomorrow.

The Pekan MP was absent from the court complex this morning.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Ahmad Akram Gharib appeared for the prosecution.

Najib, 68, is facing four charges of abusing his position to obtain gratification totalling RM2.28bil in 1MDB funds and 21 counts of money laundering involving the same monies.
