ALOR GAJAH: Police foiled an attempt by an e-hailing driver to smuggle an Indonesian woman past a roadblock so she could spend Hari Raya with her husband here.
OCPD Supt Arshad Abu said the 27-year-old driver was asked to open the car boot after police suspected something amiss at the roadblock in Simpang Ampat toll plaza at 2.30pm on Wednesday (May 12).
They found the woman, an illegal immigrant, curled up in a foetal position inside.
Supt Arshad said the 28-year-old woman claimed she wanted to be with her husband during the festive season at his workplace in Rembia here.
"She claimed that she missed her husband, who is also an Indonesian, as they have not met for more than a year due to the movement control order.
"The woman booked the ride from Nilai in Negri Sembilan and hid herself in the boot a short distance from the roadblock," he said.
Supt Arshad said the team manning the roadblock spotted the driver acting suspiciously and decided to conduct a thorough check.
He said the e-hailing driver from Seremban would be investigated under Section 56 (1) (d) of the Immigration Act for harbouring an illegal and the Emergency (Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases) (Amendment) Ordinance 2021.
The woman would be handed over to the Immigration Department, he added.
