Mother, babysitter detained after one-year-old dies in Air Itam


GEORGE TOWN: Two women, including the mother of a one-year-old toddler and her babysitter, have been detained to assist investigations into the child's death at a house in Kampung Melayu, Air Itam, here.

George Town OCPD Asst Comm Abdul Rozak Muhammad said police received a report from the Emergency and Trauma Department of Penang Hospital at about 5.16pm on Tuesday (Sept 8) regarding the child's death.

He said the toddler, a one-year-one-month-old from Sabah, was found unconscious with bluish lips by her 44-year-old babysitter at about 2pm.

"The child was subsequently rushed to Penang Hospital by her mother and the babysitter.

"She was brought to the hospital at about 2.45pm and was pronounced dead at 3.33pm after receiving emergency treatment," he said in a statement.

ACP Abdul Rozak said a post-mortem was conducted on Wednesday (Sept 9), but the cause of death could not be determined pending laboratory analysis.

He said the babysitter had been remanded for seven days from Sept 9 to 15, while the child's mother was remanded for three days from Sept 9 to 11 to facilitate further investigations.

"The case is being investigated under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001," he said.
