Gerakan treasurer Hng Chee Wey calls time on 31-year political career

PETALING JAYA: After 31 years with Gerakan, Hng Chee Wey has called it a day on his political career.

Without citing a clear reason behind his resignation, the party treasurer said it was not an easy decision for him to let go of the things built and people he had been with for over three decades

"After 31 years, it may be time to put a period on this journey. I have always believed that politics can have its own stance, society can have different voices and people should maintain basic respect and tolerance for each other.

"Different political ideologies, different judgments and different paths chosen are in fact, the normal state in a democratic society.

"We can have different political views and we can each stick to our beliefs but there is no need to become sworn enemies nor is there any need to attack each other or even turn against each other," he said in a post on Facebook on Thursday (Sept 10).

Hng said he has chosen to end his political journey with gratitude and respect and was hopeful of Malaysian moving towards a more democratic, open, inclusive, rational and progressive era in the future.
