Covid-19: Four-month-old boy among 17 fatalities, says Health DG

PUTRAJAYA: Seventeen more people have died from Covid-19 in the country, bringing the country’s death toll to 826.

The fatalities include a four-month-old boy at Tawau Hospital in Sabah, said Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.

In his daily Covid-19 press statement, he said the infant was suffering from a heart ailment.

The other casualties ranged from 34 to 82 years old, he added.

The 34-year-old is a foreigner who was declared dead on arrival at Hospital Tengku Ampuan Afzan in Kuantan. The man had no history of any co-morbidities.

Of the 17 deaths, four were in Selangor, three each in Sabah and Sarawak, two each in Johor and Pahang, and one each in Kelantan, Melaka and Negri Sembilan.

Selangor continued to be the state with the most Covid-19 cases, with 2,056 new infections recorded.

The Selangor figures represented 45% of the country’s 4,571 new cases on Thursday (Feb 4).

Dr Noor Hisham said 66% of Selangor’s cases were uncovered from infection clusters and contact tracing activities.

This included three new workplace clusters which have been detected in the state.

Johor has the second highest increase in cases with 664, followed by Kuala Lumpur with 481.

Sarawak saw a surge in cases with 270 new infections reported.

Its neighbour Sabah recorded 175 new cases.

Perlis was the only state to report zero new cases on Thursday.

With the addition of Thursday’s cases, the cumulative total of confirmed cases in the country is now at 231,483.

The number of people who have recovered from Covid-19 in the country since the pandemic began is 181,886.

There are currently 48,771 active Covid-19 cases being treated at the country’s hospitals and quarantine centres.

Of that figure, 308 patients are in intensive care units, with 135 on ventilator support.
