GEORGE TOWN: Girl scout Chua Pei Wen, 15, was born deaf and mute, but that is no obstacle for her as a young artist who has been winning drawing contests here and abroad.
She joined a poster-drawing contest during the movement control order (MCO) period and won the first and third prizes after submitting two entries.
Both art pieces for the Scouts Association of Malaysia Penang Covid-19 poster contest took her four days to complete even though she was given a month, Chua expressed in sign language after receiving her prizes yesterday.
SM Pendidikan Khas Persekutuan teacher Dr Vestly Kong said he guided Chua with the theme and she did all the work.
“She learned art from her parents and even won an award from Japan for her artworks.
“I only told her that the elements needed to relate to Penang and the Covid-19 pandemic,” he said at the prize giving ceremony held in Komtar.
Earlier Scouts Association Penang state commissioner Zulkafli Kamaruddin said the drawing competition was created to keep the scouts occupied during the MCO period.
“We have over 4,000 scouts all over Malaysia. Covid-19 derailed our activities, so we had to find a way to engage everyone,” he said.Zulkafli also announced that the association would be donating RM10,000 to the Penang Lawan Covid-19 fund.
“It is a small amount but it is our contribution to the state to help those in need,” he said.
Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow, who was guest of honour, said he was happy to see scouts were still active while facing the current tough situation.
“I was informed that there were various activities and programmes that have been planned and some that have been carried out successfully during the MCO period,” he said.
