Women, take charge of your finances

PETALING JAYA: It is important for women to be bold and savvy money managers as the fairer sex live longer than men.

 

“Women must move beyond savings, bud­geting and basic money management. They should take charge of the other areas of their finances, including investments, insurance and estate planning,” says Joyce Chuah (pic), Success Concepts’ chief executive officer who urges women to be more assertive and have a deeper understanding of how investments and markets work.

 

She noted that many are not actively managing their finances.

 

“Everyone has different goals and timelines. Don’t take the easy way out by copying what others do with their financial lives just because certain actions (like investments and mutual trust funds) have worked out for them.

 

“Women – who are often the more conser­vative gender when it comes to risk taking – are naturally more careful in their investment decisions.

 

“This attitude needs to change. Put more thought into financial planning and understand the differences between savings and investments,” says Chuah, who will be sharing her knowledge on women and financial empowerment at the “Empowering Women To Power The World” talks on March 10.

 

The talks are part of the two-day Women’s Fiesta on March 10 and 11, held in conjunction with The Star’s WOW-Women do Wonders campaign.

 

Chuah’s talk will focus on making sense of a woman’s financial life and how to become financially literate in areas that are important to her independence.

 

She will be giving pointers on how women could reorganise their finances and identify ways to bridge financial gaps. The talk will focus on reorganising a woman’s financial house, surface key takeaways and identify immediately where work needs to be done to bridge financial gaps.

 

The other speakers at the session are Yap Mun Ching, AirAsia Foundation executive director, Jenn Low, founder of jewellery brand Wanderlust + Co, award-winning film director Tunku Mona Riza, and Dahlia Nadirah Juhari, co-founder of homegrown cosmetics brand So.Lek.

 

There will also be a panel discussion on women and wealth with Hong Leong Investment Bank group managing director and CEO Lee Jim Leng, Mah Sing’s director of Group Strategy & Operations Jane Leong and Propedia Consultancy principal Vicky How.

 

On Sunday March 11, join us for the #HeForShe Couples session featuring celebrity couples – comedian Harith Iskander and Dr Jezamine Lim, beauty queen-turned-model and actress Kavita Sidhu and geologist/businessman Roberto Guiati, as well as entrepreneur Timothy Tiah and blogger Audrey Ooi.

 

Celebrity radio personality Chan Fong will also be at the Women’s Fiesta to share his take on women and success.
