Murder suspect caught by police 17 years later

KOTA KINABALU: A man wanted by police for 17 years in connection with a murder case in Penampang was finally captured at a house in Kolombong here.

The 42-year-old suspect was tracked down to the house by a team from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Penampang district police headquarters on Thursday (Oct 22), acting Penampang district police chief Supt Arisanti Aziz said.

She said the arrest came about after continuous tracking and investigation efforts by the police, who were looking for him to assist in their investigations into the death of a man at Beverly Hill in Penampang on April 11, 2009.

She said the case was classified as murder under Section 302 of the Penal Code, which provides for the death penalty or imprisonment of between 30 and 40 years.

“If the death penalty is not imposed, the offender also faces not fewer than 12 strokes of the cane, subject to the applicable legal provisions,” she said in a statement Saturday (Oct 24).
